What is therapy?
Therapy can help people feel better, be stronger, and make good choices as well as discover more about themselves. Therapy is a learning process. Through therapy, people learn about motivations that lead them to behave in certain ways and about inner strengths they have. They discover ways to overcome difficulties, make changes in themselves or their situations, or find new ways to handle themselves in tough situations. They may learn new coping skills, develop more patience, or learn to like themselves better. Often it just feels good to have a person to vent to and other times it is useful to learn different techniques to help handle challenging or confusing situations.
My Approach
A therapist is not a friend or family member that you need to impress or protect. This is a special relationship that allows you to talk about yourself and explore various aspects of your life. The most important component in therapy is a strong alliance between you and the therapist.
As a therapist, I provide a safe, confidential, and encouraging environment to explore these issues. I listen attentively, give support, and am non-judgmental. My style is energetic, enthusiastic, and positive.
I do not subscribe to a one size fits all approach, but rather I use an eclectic approach that is tailored to your needs and strengths. I have a deep respect for my clients. You are the expert on your life! Therefore, we will work together to create your treatment plan.
Therapy is an active process. In order to change thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, you must be actively involved, honest, open, and committed. I will often give homework assignments to help you continue to learn and make progress throughout the week.
